Scrappy Color Play – "Mix and Match" Sampler

This small quilt offers a twist on a traditional sampler. It’s created from paper piecing 10 different 3 each blocks. What makes this sampler extra unique is that each block is repeated in the quilt, but looks different based on your choice of color placement within the block. To begin, you will use colored pencils to experiment and decide on color placement for each of the 10 sets of blocks. (Color placement is based on what looks pleasing to you and what makes each block in your sets look most distinct from its matching block. No colorwheels here!) Next, you will learn how to paper piece using their own colored pencil markings as a fabric and sewing guide. Finally, you will learn a quick way to add sashing to each block and other finishing touches. So, you have fun "mixing" these blocks up! And others will have fun "matching" them back together! Finished quilt is 20'’ by 20'’

This is my paper pieced quilt made for the 2010 'New From Old' Alliance for American Quilts Challenge. I used my original scrappy mix and match sampler pattern. I used 1930's reproduction fabrics to create eight different foundation pieced 2 1/2" traditional blocks. Each block was used twice in the quilt but looks different based upon color placement within the block. I mixed up all the blocks--can you identify all the matches? Donated to the Alliance fundraising.

Scrappy Color Play Miniature, Sandra Starley
September 2005 Journal Quilt 8.5 X 11 inches

Sandra Starley's Journal Quilt Project - Special Exhibit Houston International Quilt Show 2005
Made as a sample for my sister Donna’s class, her paper pieced pattern called for 3 inch squares but I reduced them to 2.75 (eek) to fit this project. It is a mix and match sampler; there are 6 pairs of blocks with the same pieces but each twin looks different based on color placement. See if you can find the match for each block. Quilt awarded 2nd place in Miniature category at 2007 Utah Quilt Guild Annual Meeting (QuiltFest). The ribbon was much larger than the quilt. I gave this quilt to my sister for Christmas 2007.
